Foundation craft brewery Maine

Located in the shadows Allagash brewing Company lies a new brewery that may surprise you. Co founders Joel Mahaffey and John Bonney have been working tirelessly to have Foundation Brewing Company open and making beer by March 2014. Joel let me into the brewery and I talked with him about their plan as well as the beer (of course).

Foundation plans on releasing two flagship beers to the market in March. One is an IPA saison called Blaze that is going to be out of this world. It’s a slightly hoppy and funky brew that uses Millenium, Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Nugget, Columbus hops making it very tasty. With Eddy you get the floral and slightly funkyness of the saison as well as the flavor and citric hop profile of an American IPA. The second flagship craft beer is called Eddy (named after a water current), a farmhouse style (saison) beer that is a perfect summer selection. Eddy is brewed with Millenium, Mt. Hood, Crystal (my new favorite hop). Both beers have Foundation’s house made saison yeast.

Foundation Brewing Company

Both Joel and John met at a homebrewing club in Bangor and eventually wanted to start Foundation together. They both have 10 years of homebrewing experience making their creations very technical and precise. They both believe in the type of beers that are complex but you can also drink all day. Given that you can understand why they decided to brew two beers that are absolutely drinkable and delicious.

They chose the name Foundation as the name of their brewery because they believe beer is the foundation to many things historically. They believe that session beers are also the foundation of social interactions and really fuels a welcoming environment.

Be on the lookout for Foundation’s beer come February-March 2014 on tap locally. I assure you they wont disappoint.
